9 AM Update Monday February 22
We have an overachiever this morning! I hope you got my concern in all of my reports about the timing. Suggesting this might arrive an hour or two early is what would make the difference in impact. We have that now.
A rare Snow Squall Warning was issued in southern Pennsylvania for the heavy snow band and white out conditions. I was already racing to alert my friends to advise them to wait this one out! That same heavy snow band was extending in Maryland. The Winter Weather Advisory was expanded across I-95 in eastern Howard, southern Baltimore/Harford, and into Cecil Counties. Basically this is for more road stickage.
This was the message from NWS:
“A dangerous snow squall was located along the
leading edge of an area of heavy snow extending from near Dover to
near Littlestown, moving east at 40 mph.
HAZARD…Extremely poor visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow.
Possible flash freezes.
SOURCE…Radar indicated.
IMPACT…Dangerous life-threatening travel.
* This includes the following Interstates…
The Pennsylvania Turnpike from mile markers 286 to 295.
Interstate 83 from mile markers 0 to 34.

This split screen shows the heavy snow in winter mode on the left. On the right the higher intensity is in yellow.
This may be snow rates up to 2 inches per hour, or sleet mixed in farther south closer to Washington and along I-95.
HRRR Model Forecast Animation
8 AM to 4 PM
We can see even this was behind schedule. that first frame missed the snow reaching western parts of the beltway at 8 AM.
We still expect a change over to sleet and rain, with as thaw mid day and this afternoon.
My Call For Snowfall
I think we will hit the mark for most of these areas. Some may over achieve.
