January 8 Weather Clouds From Southern Storm Then Cold And Dry Weekend

This morning a weak storm in the southeast US has provided us with clouds, but that’s about it. This was the first of a few systems we were tracking ahead of the arctic air, and this one stays to our south. To me, this signals that the cold air is dominant and we need to watch the take that surge on the way seriously.

 

 

 

For the short term, just seasonal cold air with sunshine over the weekend.  The next system on Tuesday also appears to be staying south. As I wrote in my last report, the models have been very poor guidance flipping daily about what that will bring. Also, a signal that what is about to happen in the atmosphere with respect to the Polar Vortex and Arctic Jet is going to be a major event.  Those are actually words of experts with higher degrees than I have, so hardly an exaggeration.

The weekend weather will actually be sunny for a change. However, temperatures will remain near or below seasonal average.

Looking Ahead:

This morning, The GFS Model takes the lead on the showing ‘something’ next Tuesday, but it appears like mostly rain.   The European has flipped back the other way once again showing northing.

 

 

First Signs Of The Arctic Air

Here is a look at the upper level temperatures. These maps show the 850mb, which is roughly 5,000 Ft above the ground.

*This has been edited. I had a typo before with the 500mb jet stream on my brain. This is where the 18,000 Ft level is  located.

The first push of arctic will be by next Friday, and in place next weekend.  The follow up should be event colder/stronger.
