Saturday July 22

It may seem like just another hot day in this stretch as the sky is hazy and only partially filled with clouds at noon. But Doppler Radar showed a very active line of storms in western Maryland charging eastward through the mountains. I wanted to compare this to the HRRR Model- High Resolution Rapid Refresh. This does its best work when it has something to track, and it appears as if the late morning algorithm was on to this band. Compare to the first image in the slide show below…

Let’s take this out through the rest of the day and tonight. It shows this first line reaching metro Baltimore and York around 3 PM, but there is more to follow. In fact to district strong surges of storms pulse around I-95 and may hang on the Delmarva as well. A second push will arrive this evening between 7 and 9 PM. The final cluster is showing up here after midnight, and that could be the stronger or most widespread…

We are in the Slight Risk zone today. That means there is a chance for storms to turn severe, but not all will be that strong. however, those that do may contain large hail, winds over 60 mph, flash flooding, and isolated tornados.

Should there be any alerts issued:

Watch: It may happen over the next few hours

Warning: It is happening NOW and being tracked through a specific county or two. This is when you need to get inside or hold off your driving plans.
