Fog Swapped With Wind And Rain Then Colder

Sunday January 22 – On this date last year we had a Blizzard Warning and the heaviest snowstorm in Baltimore history was underway. Now, just thick fog and waiting for a strong, but warmer storm. The energy that produced deadly tornadoes in the Gulf Coast region will feed into the system that is heading our way. We are in a second day of thick fog highlighting the moisture in the air that is waiting for the approaching storm. Strong winds will wrap around the next storm but there is a limited supply of cold air. So it will be a rain storm, but snow will develop from the Poconos to New York and northern New England. After a few days of wind and rain, colder air and a more winter like pattern will settle in for the end of the week.

Here is a look at the upper level winds around the next storm. This will ride up the mountains and then redevelop off of the coast. Note these wind speeds are around 5,000 Ft aloft. At the surface, locally we should expect winds to surpass 30 mph, with gusts to 50 mph to strong on the coast.

This plot shows the front and rain hanging back north. I am only pointing out the model bias with systems verifying north of projections. This could allow the cold to catch up the back edge off the moisture.
