January 28 – This is a quick look at the upper level energy that will pivot overhead on Friday. It will be unstable enough to bring cool wind, clouds, and perhaps flurries or snow showers. This is the second part of the equation that didn’t come together to form a coastal storm that some had hinted at to follow our blizzard. The timing was off, but the energy is there. But the surface Low will be well off the east coast. Gale Warnings are in place along the coast as it pulls away. Strong winds will blow in from the northwest to bring Lake Enhanced snow to the mountains, where a Winter Weather Advisory is in place. We end up in between,
Snow Squalls
This is where the upper level energy comes into play. If you have tracked the first round of snow showers with me earlier this month, I plotted the vorticity or spin aloft to show how it can carry snow over the mountains into southern Pennsylvania and central Maryland. This fort max, or top spin aloft at the 500 mb level (roughly 18,000 Ft) needs to pass near or south of Baltimore for showers off of Lake Erie to reach us. The prime spot for passage is central Virginia. This plot for Friday suggests we will have a chance at more flakes… From daybreak until the afternoon. Many schools are already delayed or closed, but for the rest of us, it’s worth paying attention to.
Stickage: We could end up with a dusting to an inch, especially in the hills west and north of Baltimore.

Temperature Outlook
A BIG warm up is on the way. In fact, this latest GEFS Ensemble is even warmer than what I showed this morning. It pushes Baltimore to 69°F, but that will come with rain, thunderstorms, and possible flooding. Then a crash back to reality to follow. Winter is not done yet. In fact, we can test the weather folklore that “when winter has thunder, snow will follow in a week or under”.

Get the award winning Kid Weather App I made with my oldest son and support our love for science, weather, and technology. Our 3 year anniversary of the release and our contribution to STEM education is this November. It has been downloaded in 60 countries, and works in both temperature scales. With your support we can expand on the fun introduction to science and real weather.
