The eruption of storms we were tracking out of western Pennsylvania on Monday night into Maryland were supposed to fade east of the mountains. There was enough of a southeast kink to the winds to help enhance the storms with moisture off of the Chesapeake Bay while the heat was still in place. What was most impressive was that this was just before dawn on Tuesday August 4th. Large hail was reported in Howard and Harford Counties. Meanwhile in the middle, perched high above Harbor Court at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor was the talented Tim Shahan. He has a technique for capturing lightning that should be trademarked. The purple light was just fitting after the only preseason Ravens practice at M&T Bank Stadium Monday. There might be time-lapse video to go along with these photos, and I will post that if/when available.

This backlit lightning was described by Tim like this: “The Ultimate Flash Bulb! For those of us who remember “Flash Bulbs (and Flash Cubes).” Other than some cropping and white balance, I made no other changes to this exposure. You can see the reflection of the lightning in the windows of the TransAmerica Tower.”
