Thursday September 23 2021
Heavy rain has already fallen in our region, and more is expected this morning. This slow moving cold front will take all day to reach the coast, allowing for more downpours and flooding.
The temperature contrast is impressive ranging from 40s in the mountains to upper 70s to central Maryland.
Metro areas plan for cooler air by lunchtime. We all get into the chill tonight. See the maps below.
Flooding Alerts This Morning
- Flood Watch continues for the region.
- Flood Warnings issued for some river valleys.
- Coastal Flood Advisory along the Chesapeake Bay- due to a strong south wind pushing up water and restricting normal tide flow.
Moring Radar
4 AM to 6 AM
The flow of heavy cells and lines of rain continue to flow south to north over the same areas.
Notice the enhancement along the Chesapeake Bay in the last few frames…
There is a chance some cells turn severe before noon. Heads up for possible warnings that may be issued.
A few bands of downpours will be crossing metro areas as the front itself slowly moves east.

Morning Surface Weather
Morning Jet Stream
The reason the front is so slow moving has been the high circulation around this upper level Low. That has also developed a low level jet streak, forcing the storm cells/lines from south to north.
Temperatures
The contrast is impressive… From 40s in Western Maryland to upper 70s in central Maryland and Delmarva.
