Monday March 8 2021
We had a chilly weekend, but this is the coldest morning of the stretch. Starting the work week with the second day in a row BWI reached the lower 20s. This is actually a good thing. It means High Pressure is overhead, so the clear sky and light wind allowed this drop on the thermometers. We can only go up from here.
I feel like I need to repeat myself because it does’t seem real (and my wife didn’t believe it): The 70s will reach our region in just a few days!
Morning Surface Weather
Satellite Loop
- Mesmerizing: Check out the texture of the clouds over the Atlantic (right side of the loop window).
- We have a narrow band of high clouds, but will remain mostly clear today.
- The color change is the switch from night to day mode.
Morning Temperatures
This has been the coldest morning of the stretch and one of the coldest all winter. BWI dropped to 21ºF with many inland areas in the teens!
Afternoon Temperatures
- Normal High in Baltimore: 51ºF
- Record High in Baltimore: 80ºF in 2000

Computer guidance is pushing 70ºF on Thursday, but often we end up warmer earlier. So we may see that number on local thermometers on Wednesday.
Temperature Outlook
This shows the odds of temperatures getting above or below average, not the actual temperatures. But it does suggest where it may be well above normal.
Looking Ahead:
Friday Afternoon to Monday Evening (GFS Model)
Cold Front Friday: Rain showers arrive with an end to this warm surge. I am not a fan of locking into modeling this far away, but I do believe we should watch that cold front next weekend. It may stall and keep showers around. Also, the cold temperatures behind the front might be underestimated.
There is even colder air that will try to drop in later in the weekend, which will feed into a developing storm. Sunday and Monday could bring a wintry mix then chilly rain.
*For any impact from winter precipitation in March, there needs to heavy precipitation falling overnight or early morning. Otherwise, stickage is not likely.
