October 2 2020
This evening we have two main events in our sky show. Now that the sky has cleared out, you only have to brave the autumn chill for a few minutes. The moon is one day past full but will be close to Mars in the sky. That is AMAZING, but may not the main show.
At 8:30 PM there will be an 11 minute opportunity to spot the Space Station Flyover. Then at 9:16 PM, NASA will attempt to launch the
Begins: We will begin to see it in the Northwest sky when it passes over northern Michigan.
The peak elevation is 40º above the horizon to the north/northeast of Baltimore.
Ends: This will fade from the view in the Southeast sky when over the Atlantic…
Keep looking in that direction for the Rocket Launch, or at least go in and get warm, then come back out a half hour later (see more below).

ISS Trivia
You will be able to see it with your own eyes, but binoculars may help you identify some of the solar panels and central structure. I don’t recommend a telescope since it will be moving pretty fast. Check out these stats:
- Orbital speed: 17,000 mph
- Complete Orbit = 92.65 minutes
- Orbits per day: 15.54
- Days in orbit: 17 years, 26 days
- Altitude: Ranges between 249 and 256 miles above the ground
- Origin: The first component was launched in 1998
- Occupied since November 2, 2000. This year will be the 20th anniversary!
Rocket Launch From Wallops Island
This is Northrop Grumman’s 14th resupply mission.
It will be on an Antares Rocket carrying roughly 8,000 pounds of research, crew supplies and hardware. This will include a new space toilet for testing. Howard Wolowitz was not available for comment.
- Time: 9:16 PM There is a 5 minute window for this to launch tonight
- The location and flight will be to the southeast of Baltimore and central Maryland.
- It will be seen in Annapolis and Baltimore 60 to 90 seconds after launch. Southern PA and Maryland Mountains by 1:20 seconds after launch.
- What: Supply Mission for ISS
- Visible in all of Maryland and the Mid Atlantic Region.
