October 1 2020
Is it OK to talk about snow now? As we begin the last 3 months of the year, it is more acceptable to look ahead to the winter season. I keep getting the question and wil be spending the next few weeks working on it.
I do feel confident stating that WE WILL GET MORE SNOW, because we can’t get less. Last winter was an absolute bust for snow in general and forecasts. This should be different and I do have Faith in the Flakes! FITF
If you have been shopping in grocery stores since Covid19 restrictions have been lessened, you may have seen these publications in the check-out isle. There are many ‘almanacs’ but the two most popular are The Farmer’s Almanac and the Old Farmer’s Almanac. Similar names, and both have been around for over 200 years, but they are different!
Farmers Almanacs Outlooks
This post is purely to show what they published and let you explore more. I use many factors in my winter outlook, and I will add them to this Winter Outlook Series. I aim to have provide you with as much of the info I explore, then issue my forecast around the end of this month.
The Farmer’s Almanac
- Published since 1818
- Seasonably Cold, Wet, and White
- Face Value: This looks like a call for a near normal winter. But their details are a little more exciting. #FITF
From their website:
The possibility of a blizzard hitting the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states during the second week of February. This storm may bring up to 1-2 feet of snow to cities from Washington, D.C. to Boston, Massachusetts!
The Old Farmer’s Almanac
- Published since 1792
- Sheets of Sleet
- Face Value: This looks like a call for more ice storms than snow, without using the word ice.
From their website
Specifically, precipitation will be below normal from Delmarva into North Carolina
Map of AVERAGE winter snowfall:
30 year average snowfall from The National Weather Service for Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia.
Where is Pennsylvania? I am not posting the NWS PA snow map because it does not match up well. It undercuts what I believe is the real average in Adams, York, and Lancaster Counties. They show 25 to 30 inches, but it is closer to 40 inches from my documents in the past 15 years. I hope to have new maps ready with my winter outlook.
FITF GEAR
