Thursday October 1 2020

We are starting this new month of October with a trifecta of sky show events. This evening will be the first of two full moons this month. The next one (Blue Moon) will be on Halloween.  We also have a flyover of the International Space Station, then a rocket launch from Wallops Island just a few minutes later. That rocket has a supply mission that includes a new toilet NASA will be testing.

Rocket Launch Wallops October 1

I was so excited to share this with you, but the weather is not cooperating for all of us.  A thin band of clouds and some rain will hinder the view for about 1/3 of our region. At the bottom of this post is a satellite loop and cloud forecast map. If you are obstructed, there are video streams below to give you another option to watch.

I have added two live stream videos from NASA below. These show the live view from the Space Station and  also a broadcast of the rocket launch procedures beginning at 9 PM on NASA TV.

Full Moon

Full Moon Harvest Moon October 1 2020

Names: This is the Harvest Moon, also know as the Corn Moon, Fruit Moon, and Barley Moon.

Moon Rise is 7:08 PM in Baltimore.

International Space Station Flyover

This is the map of the Space Station course this evening.

ISS Flyover October 1 2020

If the sky is clear by you…

Begins: We will begin to see it in the Northwest sky when it passes over northern Wisconsin.

The peak elevation is 66º above the horizon to the north/northeast of Baltimore.

Ends: This will fade from the view in the Southeast sky when over the Atlantic…

Again, if the sky is clear (enough), keep looking in that direction for the Rocket Launch (see more below).

ISS Trivia

You will be able to see it with your own eyes, but binoculars may help you identify some of the solar panels and central structure. I don’t recommend a telescope since it will be moving pretty fast. Check out these stats:

  • Orbital speed: 17,000 mph
  • Complete Orbit = 92.65 minutes
  • Orbits per day: 15.54
  • Days in orbit: 17 years, 26 days
  • Altitude:  Ranges between 249 and 256 miles above the ground
  • Origin: The first component was launched in 1998
  • Occupied since November 2, 2000. This year will be the 20th anniversary!

Rocket Launch From Wallops Island

This is Northrop Grumman’s 14th resupply mission.

It will be on an Antares Rocket carrying roughly 8,000 pounds of research, crew supplies and hardware. This will include a new space toilet for testing. Howard Wolowitz was not available for comment.

NASA Rocket Launch Wallops Island October 1

  • Time: 9:38 PM
  • UPDATE: SCRUBBED TONIGHT! Will post when next attempt is made
  • The location and flight will be to the southeast of Baltimore and central Maryland.
  • It may be seen in Annapolis and Baltimore 60 to 90 seconds after launch. Southern PA and Maryland Mountains by 1:20 seconds after launch.
  • What: Supply Mission for ISS
  • Visible in all of Maryland and the Mid Atlantic Region.

As of this morning, the weather for launch is 70% favorable.  That is to get off of the ground, not necessarily for your viewing.

NASA TV LIVE Stream Video

The launch procedures will begin broadcasting at 9 PM

Weather

The sky has been clear over the launch location, and most of Delmarva east and south of Easton to Dover.  It has also been clear northwest of York to Hagerstown in the mountains. So there they can enjoy.

For central Maryland and metro areas along I-95, the beltways, and I-83 the clouds have been wining. Rain had developed in parts of central Maryland between Washington, Baltimore, and Annapolis.

Satellite Loop

5:30 PM to 8 PM

The True Color transitions to gray Infrared model after sunset.
