The strong line of storms was expected after midnight Wednesday April 8. But it surely overachieved before sunrise across the state of Maryland, with a vivid display of lightning and loud thunder.

A few pockets of storm damage spanned from the mountains of Garrett County to Woodbine and Sykesville in Carroll County. The winds were at least severe limits over 60 mph to snap large trees in half. As of the time I posted this, there were no additional storm reports from NWS. I contacted them to see if they had plans to investigate further. When you see the pics below, you can understand why that might be worth while.

That cell produced enough hail to cover the ground as shown in the video below.  There was also large hail covering the ground in Harford County, and confirmation it was almost silver dollar size. Check it out.

Hail Video🧊

Let’s start with the video from Mt. Airy, thanks to Jill Gilmore. The hail was heavy enough to cover the ground.

More Hail in Harford County:

Bel Air: Also enough to cover the ground at Donna Conneally’s house.

How Large?

Silver Dollar, almost Golf Ball Size north of Bel Air in Hickory

Storm Damage

At this time it appears to be straight line wind or microburst damage.  Winds between 60 mph and 80 mph can snap large trees like this. If NWS has any updates, I will post them here.

One of the areas hit hard was in Sykesville (Carroll County).

Huge trees ripped in half, chicken coop completely flipped upside down, and our sheep shed was flattened. It’s debris was carried quite far. Thankfully, all of our animals (and our family) is okay. Streaker Rd Sykesville
