Wednesday Evening Update February 5 2020
A Flood Watch goes into effect for much of our region from Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. This include metro Baltimore, and areas along and east or south of I-95. Rainfall will be between 2 and 4 inches in many of these areas.
The limited cold air to the north will provide some freezing rain in interior Pennsylvania tonight through Thursday morning.
Flood Watch and Winter Weather Advisory
Storm Set Up
You can make the argument that this storm should have been our ‘winter storm’ of the season. Under normal circumstances with us on the chilly side of this system and a few days with waves of Low Pressure, this could have been a significant event. But this is not a normal winter. That cold air is limited to our north. So the leading edge of cold air will not be able to hold in place. The result will be a significant event, but the results will be over 2 inches or rain for many. Some flooding is possible as this comes in less the span of less than 48 hours.
Irony
- It is snowing in central Texas this evening, but the heavy moisture we get will be in the air that is not cold enough.
- Today is the anniversary of the first of two epic snowstorms in 2010. Between February 5 and 10 that year, nearly 50 inches of snow fell on Baltimore. This capped the most snow of any season on record.
Storm Timeline
Tonight there may be some spotty ice in southern PA, but the focus will be on the rain moving it. There will be waves of rain, heavy at times through Friday. Here is a look at some time frames of relevance.
- Heavy Bands Of Rain
- Some Thunder Possible Thursday Evening And Friday
- Snow Returns To Western Maryland
- Some Snow Showers Possible In Central Maryland Friday Afternoon
