Monday January 20 2020
MLK Day is going to be cold. We start off in the 20s, but wind chills are in the single digits and teens. It will be dry, but the wind will make this one of the coldest days we’ve had this winter.
Today is the 20th Anniversary of our 10 day winter in 2000. It seemed like there would be no snow, then between January 20 and 30 we had three storms, two of them leaving record snowfall. January 20, 2000 brought 5.7″ snow, then January 25, 2000 left 14.9″ snow, then January 30 – Super Bowl Sunday brought 2 to 4 inches of snow with an icy mix. That season ended up above average with snowfall in the middle of a warm pattern.
Here we are with a few days of arctic air, but it will repeat to Canada by the end of the week. That is when our next storm will arrive. I do not trust the model handling of this, so it’s worth watching for another weekend wintry mix. But first, here’s what we have for MLK Day:

Looking Ahead
The storm for next weekend I began to track yesterday has made that expected shift east (southeast) and sooner. That normally would result in a colder set up. But the modeling does not leave much cold air in place, however it brings in the core of upper level cold air behind. Here is a look at a big difference contrasting the European ECWMF and GFS Models. The later does keep colder air around for a start as snow on Saturday morning.
I would just plan for potential wintry weather this weekend. It’s too early for specifics, but worth considering this far out in time.
Temperature Outlook
The forecast for this weekend is subject to change depending on the timing and track of the storm. Note, the outlook last week for the past weekend was a warmer than what verified.
