Monday January 13 2020

The warm weekend produced on weather record on Sunday. It was early in the morning when the record high of 70ºF was tied.  It felt like spring through the day but it will not last much longer. A north wind has cooled us a little, but we remain mild and above ‘normal’ most of the week. Winter will return in a few days. I’ve been tracking the modeling for a storm this weekend that has shown consistency bringing in snow and a wintry mix on Saturday. If the model error behaves like our last event (s), then we should end up colder and potentially with more snow than shown now.

Morning Weather

Some showers in the southeast US will reach lower Delmarva and Ocean City. More rain will spread in for the rest of us on Tuesday. Otherwise, it will be cloudy and cooler with a wind from the north.

Looking Ahead

  • Tuesday: Rain showers
  • Wednesday: The warmest day of the week
  • Friday: Colder temps back to the 30s
  • Saturday: Tracking snow changing to mix and rain

Saturday Snow:

The ECWMF Model has been consistent for a few days showing snow on Saturday. You may recall I have been highlighting model errors with a tendency for systems to shift southeast and arrive sooner. So please do not take this as a lock. I expect some adjustments that could bring in more wintry weather starting as soon as Friday night.

GFS Model

This is the American model that is showing less snow and a faster movement of this event. This is less reliable, but often used to compare and most importantly track adjustments in timing and track. Here we see the same time frame at 1 PM Saturday with snow already changing to a wintry mix.

Storm Animation

I do believe this will change. I am showing this only to display the movement and transition from snow (blue) to wintry mix and rain.  The error and adjustment should shift this to the Southeast and sooner. If this happens and behaves like our prior storm, then we would end up colder and with more snow. Stay tuned.
