Monday January 6 2020

The little snow event on the way will arrive Tuesday afternoon and depart Tuesday evening. While the bulk of the snow will fall while temperatures are above freezing, there may be a burst in the afternoon that can overtake the warmer ground. The National Weather Service has expanded the Winter Weather Advisory for Tuesday January 7 to include central Maryland west of the Bay, but north of the reporting station at BWI. Anne Arundel County is not included.

See my original forecast from earlier today below to compare:

NWS Winter Weather Advisory:

  • Included in Maryland are Harford, Cecil, Baltimore, Carroll, Howard, Frederick, Montgomery, and Washington Counties in Maryland.
  • NWS Forecast: 1 to 3 inches of snow, noon to 7 PM.
  • Heaviest between 3 PM and 6 PM

My Forecast:

First Call For Snowfall

Zones Explained and model timelines below.

My totals account for melting and what may stick on the grass.  I do not put much value in the computer model guidance snow totals for many reasons. So if you have seen higher amounts, consider the melting factor from warm ground AND the chance the model is over playing the event.

Blue: All snow zone. There will be a range from just a coating to up to 2 inches. There will be burst of snow, that are more likely in the mountains and parts of Frederick and Carroll Counties.  Farther east and north the snow will likely be lighter. Most of this total will be on the grass. Watch for road issues possible after 3 or 4 PM.

Pink: Wet Snow or Mix if rain and snow. This includes most metro areas. Best chance for a coating up to 1 inch on the grass and car tops… More likely as the sun gets lower after 4 PM.  This region is also in the risk of some icing as temps drop below freezing at night. Any ice will depend on chemical treatment AND if the pavement is wet as temps drop overnight.

Yell0w: Mostly rain, but the system should mix or end with snow. The ground should remain wet.

Headlines:

  • Snow Timing: 1 PM to 7 PM across the region
  • Temperatures: Most metro areas stay above freezing, but after dark wet pavement can ice up
  • Temperatures: Typical colder suburbs will get some stickage and some pavement icing after dark for what is still wet.
  • Bay Areas: Rain will end as snow, but this is not your winter event.

The GFS Model is the most aggressive with snow, but I think may be a little overdone.

Temperatures
At sunset, the freezing line will be west and north of Baltimore. The intensity of the snow will determine if it can overcome the warmer ground. Metro areas will be safely above freezing with wet pavement.
Wednesday Morning
The freezing line will push through the cities to the Chesapeake Bay shore.
Not all areas will freeze. Any icing will depend on how wet the pavement is as temps chill below 32ºF, plus if pavement is treated with salt/chemicals.
