Friday May 24 2019
The storms that blew through yesterday lived up the the expectations. The bulk of the energy came through Howard County central Maryland around 3:30 PM. Howard County Public Schools made a great decision to keep kids and delay the buses. I think the lesson was learned from the Baltimore County event. The National Weather Service has already confirmed it was an EF-1 tornado. That has winds between 86 mph and 110 mph. Today, there will a survey to confirm the precise path and wind intensity. But many trees have been knocked down bear Broken Land Parkway.
Here is the Doppler Radar Velocity Scan loop, showing a distinct tornado vortex signature over Columbia around 3:32 PM
First Hand Damage Report
From Marcia Balmadier: Wires beginning on Pindell School Road bear Guilford, then crossing as far wide as Freetown near atholton HS and west of my street which is Shadow Lane. Lots of damage!!!
Photo of the Day
John Taylor captured this from the top of the parking lot at the Columbia Mall. The green color within the shelf cloud is an indication of hail
