A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for much of our region until 8 PM. This includes most of southern Pennsylvania, central Maryland between Hagerstown and the upper Eastern Shore. Conditions are favorable for thunderstorms that may turn severe. This is not a promise! But the latest information does suggest that there may be a few rounds of showers and storms to contend with through the evening. The first wave will be in metro areas between 3 and 4 PM.
Severe Storm Qualifier:
- Winds over 58 mph
- Large hail over 1 inch diameter
- Isolated Tornados
Please note that as we get closer, these are potential alerts to be issued.
- Severe Thunderstorm Watch: A broad area and window with a 4 to 6 hour time frame. This means it MIGHT happen.
- Severe Thunderstorm Warning: A focused area like a county usually with a 30 to 60 minute time frame. This means it IS HAPPENING NOW.
- Tornado Warning: A focused area and time frame. This would list towns in a likely path within a 15 to 45 minute window.

Two cells identified as ‘severe’ were moving to the east t 35 mph. This will affect Frederick and Carroll Counties. I would watch along I-70 from Mt Airy through Eldersburg and Ellicott City through 3:30 PM to see how this behaves.

This is only for GUIDANCE. It is NOT PERFECT and likely to be off a little on location and timing. But worth comparing to the verified event to see if it is faster, and more or less widespread.
