March 29 2019

This date on the calendar marks the most extreme weather on the Baltimore record book. This single date stands for the largest snowstorm and highest temperature. It’s the biggest different in weather shown on the calendar all year, and was just a few years apart.

The most snow for the month of March fell on March 29 in 1942. This single day produced 21.9 inches of snow and still stands as the 7th highest on record for Baltimore. Just three years later, the highest temperature for the month of March was hit at 90ºF, in 1945.  The coldest temperature on this date was 18ºF in 1923 marking a 72 degree spread.

There was a larger spread for March 4 with a record high of 80ºF ironically in that same year of 1923. But the March 4th date lowest temperature was also the lowest for the month and set just a few years ago. In 2014 we reached +4ºF. That marks a 76 degree spread for a calendar date. I still think the largest snowstorm and highest temperature for the 29th wins.

Today, we see the benefit of the clouds last night keeping morning temps mild. There will be some rain, but confined to the mountains in the west and hills to our north. It will clip the northern suburbs between Frederick, Westminster, and York.

Saturday we all  get within a few degrees of 70ºF, then drop to the lower 50s and 40s with rain Sunday. Here’s a look to help you with you plans.
