Tuesday July 31 2018

How about we end this epic wet month with more rain? Well, we don’t really have a choice. This morning we start with drizzle that does not show on radar, then we watch for showers this afternoon.  The radar simulation I showed yesterday morning was form the NAM model and was wrong, so I am back to the HRRR display below and it points to heavy rain in the mountains and to our south Virginia.

For what it is worth this month actually started with five days in a row in the 90s, three days between 96ºF and 99ºF.  Seem like a distant memory 16.67 inches later. This has been the wettest July and second wettest month on record.  The top spot goes to August 1955 with 18.35. But that also featured two tropical storms. This month had none, making it even more impressive.

As we start August, the wet pattern remains. But perhaps we will see a reverse of fortune and end the month warm and dry.  This week and next week still show rain, but mostly in the form of showers and storms in the afternoons.

Morning Set Up

Temperatures

You may see plenty of 70s, but it feels cool and damp.

Surface Weather

The reason for drizzle and the cold, damp feel is this warm front. It is nearly stationary, but should be moving back north today. The Low Pressure to our west will be the focus for rain and storms today to our west and south, but some showers will develop this afternoon.
