A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 9 PM for our region south of Baltimore and west of the Chesapeake Bay This includes Howard, Anne Arundel, and Montgomery Counties southward. However strong storms are entering Frederick as this watch is issued, and I think the north side of this cell will pass through Carroll and Baltimore County, which may include the beltway in the 4 PM hour.

This ‘watch’ means storms may intensify with large hail and winds of 58 mph or stronger. It may happen. If storms reach that intensity, a warning will be issued with specific times tracking that storm in towns and counties.

Any of these storms can produce dangerous lightning, even before the first drop of rain. Please pay attention to the time it may be in your area, watch the sky closely, and listen for thunder growing closer.

The peak activity should be between 5 PM and 7 PM across metro Washington and southern Baltimore/Annapolis area. One cell may cross the Bay to the Delmarva, and the other into southern Maryland. Here is a look at the latest radar loop and simulation below where these cells should track.

*I’d pay attention the north side of that cell in metro Baltimore even though it is not in the official Watch area.
