January 17 2018

One thing I can say about this winter is that we have consistently had little snow events and for the most part they worked out as expected. The only hiccup was the late night high resolution models the night before that suggested there would be a snow hole and limit the amounts in central Maryland. That was my final post before heading to bed, but I stayed with my original forecast noting they were only two models and we still had light snow expected Wednesday morning.

The upper level energy did catch up enough to give us the boost in the pre-dawn hours that allowed the cold air to work its magic and take wet roads back to the icy sheet I mentioned. That was why many schools closed, even though the bulk of the snow ended during there morning commute.

Below is the comparison of snow totals to my forecast (shown first). Please go back to the social media post for this article and grade my forecast.  I am usually harsh on myself, but this seems to chalk up to another A-.  What do you think?

My Call For Snowfall

Baltimore officially reported 1.3 inches fitting my forecast “around 1 inch”. This brings our seasonal total to 6.5 inches.

Overall this worked out well… but I did notice the boost of snow in parts of metro Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties that were over 1 inch.

My poor reports will come from the west side west of Washington and south of Frederick. That is the outer edge of my main view, but it is on my map and does count in the grading for those who live or travel there.
