Thursday August 24

The major weather headline for the next week will be the resurgence of Tropical Storm Harvey in the Gulf of Mexico as it continues to strengthen. The very warm water in the upper 80s will assist in rapid growth and this will become a hurricane when it makes landfall on the Texas coast and warnings are already posed. This will be bad! It will then stall for a few days dumping well over the 15 inch rainfall forecast between Corpus Christi and Houston.

Winds have already jumped from 45 mph to 60 mph in the 3 hours between updates from the National Hurricane Center this morning. The problems will rival Allison which in 2001 arrived as a tropical storm and stalled dumping a few feet of rain and causing $9 billion in damage.

Check out the forest landfall Friday night and then the location through Tuesday along the same part of the coast. Rain plus storm surge and constant onshore flow will lead to extreme problems on the north side of the center.

Rainfall forecast is over 15 inches… and that upside window is very large given the intensity and stalled movement.

Local Weather

For us, High Pressure will dominate the Mid Atlantic and keep us pleasant. Today should reach the lower 80s in the cities, but 70s inland. That cool down will spread as the flow of air will remain cooler than normal through next week.

Only a slight chance of late day showers, mainly in the hills and mountains today.
