May 2 2017 – Something special is happening. If this were winter, it would be wonderful (for snow lovers). In May, it eliminates the summer-like heat and will take our temperatures backwards by a month or so. That cold front that left much of our region without severe storms yesterday… but hit WV to western PA pretty hard, is now starting to bring in cooler air. Winds today will gust to 30 mph or so, and then the cooler temps start to arrive tonight.
*Wind restrictions have already been placed on some area bridges.
Another rain event Friday will bring in the mother load of chilly air by spring standards. I have some friends that opened their pools early… This will prove that there was no rush. This could last through next week. Temps will rebound a little today, but will be noticeably cooler and less humid than yesterday.
The long range outlook is the big story here. The NAO or North Atlantic Oscillation is about to take a nose dive to -2! This ‘negative’ number is a reflection of a blocking pattern in the North Atlantic which will send abnormally cool air our way, and it may be centered on the Mid Atlantic most of next week.
Check out the Upper Air maps that show this off better:
This pattern will be stuck or blocked into the end of next week.
About That Rain….
The storm that will help to shift the entire pattern will arrive Thursday evening to our west. The best chance of rain for most of our region will be by Friday morning…. It should depart by Saturday but the chilly unstable air will keep the risk of showers around. Both of my boys will be playing in a baseball game together on Saturday morning. It’s a big deal for this dad, so I will be paying close attention to the weekend weather. I think we will get it in… but the risk of showers will be around, especially in the afternoon.

Storm Smart: My STEM Assembly Program
Click here to see the details and how this educational program is also a fundraiser for schools. We can start scheduling for May now.
Get the award winning Kid Weather App I made with my oldest son and support our love for science, weather, and technology. Our 3 year anniversary of the release and our contribution to STEM education is this November. It has been downloaded in 60 countries, and works in both temperature scales. With your support we can expand on the fun introduction to science and real weather.
