Sunday April 2 – Today will be a mild spring day. More sunshine and warmer temperatures back into the 60s. Saturday brought a mix of clouds with more sunshine in southern Maryland where Swann Farm. It put on a great display in the time lapse video that owner Kelly sent me, but comes with the bitter sweet reality of season upon us. Things are growing, but there is a problem shared by most farms in our region.

The record warm February and multiple freezes in March took its toll on the Peach blossoms. Here is a look at a peach blossom that was pulled yesterday. Kelly Swann

“The way to test is to take a current (late stage) bloom and pull on the pistil, sometimes you find a peach, other times nothing. The white mass at the bottom of the flower is the peach. We tested 100 and only found 15”

This means that they estimate 85% of the peach crop was lost this year. They will have a full update on their Facebook page today. On the optimistic side, it’s two weeks until the strawberries.

They will have an update on their Facebook Page today.

Temperature Outlook

We will have two more rain events this week (Monday night-Tuesday, and again on Thursday). But the temperatures will remain above freezing.
