Winter Weather Advisory Cancelled By I 95 Still On North

January 14 – Once again the influence of the warmer air off of the Chesapeake Bay that I mentioned this morning is showing its colors, or lack thereof on the Advisory Map. The National Weather Service has cancelled the Winter Weather Advisory for metro areas near the Bay, along I-95 from Harford to Baltimore, and Howard County. There will be some sleet but the air is to warm for any stickage. I mentioned the ground is holding on to some of the heat from our past two days, so marginal icing on pavement was expected. I know many area activities were cancelled prematurely. As a parent, I am still waiting to see if we will have my son’s basketball game (in the northern icy zone) later today.

Side note: I consult for Johns Hopkins and they kept their activities on schedule today in Washington and Baltimore. The latest radar simulation is below.

Notes:

Split County Zones: When you ask about weather in a county, it is not uniform. Baltimore’s Hereford Zone is famous for having more snow and ice, thus splitting the county for school delays and closings. But Harford County has a similar ridge and colder zone to the north. Howard County has it to the west. This was acknowledged over two years ago when NWS split counties into new zones, which they are using today. See more here: New County Advisory Zones

Icy North – Once again temperatures will be near or just below freezing in Carrol, northern Baltimore, northern Harford, and Cecil County in Maryland. Also southern Pennsylvania. There will be two waves of moisture, some with sleet early afternoon. Late afternoon and evening will be freezing rain. It’s after 5 PM when roads have the best risk of being icy (lack of solar radaition to help thaw).

Note Push And Wrong About Snow – I’ve done my best to explain the fine details, but acknowledge that my snow map was wrong. The rest of this is a signal that the southern push continues to win this winter. All events should be given that nudge at least 50 to 100 miles north for where it will verify.
