Cold Morning But Christmas And Winter Start Warm

Tuesday December 20 – Temperatures this morning have dropped into the teens and lower 20s in much of our area. There is no shortage of cold air, but the timing is not good for winter lovers… so far. The storm pattern remains to our west which means warm ups ahead of storms and not much snow in sight. If you have Faith in the Flakes, I want to remind you of last year and how we had a blowtorch December followed by the largest snow dumping on record in January. There is plenty of winter left, but it will take a few weeks to shift the pattern.

Here is a look at the regional temperatures this morning but at least there is not much wind. This afternoon will have highs back into the upper 30s. Wednesday morning will mark the official start of winter at 5:44 AM, but that will marks the shift back to a warming trend leading into the next storm. The good news is that Christmas looks rather quiet locally and not nearly as warm as last year (see records below). The storm should limit the rain to Christmas Eve, but the Ravens game in Pittsburgh should be dry.

The jet stream shows the split across the nation with the eastern US warmer than average and the cold air locked up in the west.

It looks worse than it may be. The temperatures translation at the surface looks more like this. That is mid 40s to near 50°F

Not Last December!

Remember the blowtorch December? We had 5 recored high temperatures at BWI and Christmas around 70°F. That will NOT be the case this year. But also consider that the extremes from last year actually balanced out. Click here to see my full report of 2015. But remember that we had the abrupt shift in fortune to cold and snow in January. I see the pattern shifting in January not necessarily a repeat of that storm though. But it will get active soon enough. FITF
