Friday December 16 – A Winter Weather Advisory covers much of our area tonight through Saturday morning. The Winter Storm Watch in north central Maryland is likely to be adjusted later today. This may be the first accumulating snow of the season, but the ice will be the big story Saturday morning. This is due to the later arrival of snow tonight, allowing the warmer air at cloud level to move in before more of the precipitation can do its thing. A dusting to 1 inch south of the main cities, with an inch or so on the north end, mostly before sunrise Saturday. At daylight, ice will be the concern. But if you have plans after noon, you should be OK.

Below are the model timelines and multiple NWS office regional snow and ice maps.

The deep freeze we are in has the top layer of the ground rock solid. Computer models show the warming, but temperatures are rated for 6 feet above the ground where thermometers are location. I think the icing will last longer due to the frozen ground. But normal road treatment and solar energy should allow for most roads to be passable by mid day Saturday. The side roads, sidewalks, driveways, etc may hold on to the ice the longest.

That is why the Canadian Model may show the better solution for the front end of this storm. The GFS model shows snow mixing back over Sunday afternoon/evening. This may arrive by the end of the Ravens game.
