Friday December 16 – Looking at the national radar, this storm appears to be huge! After a week of national headlines, it might appear as an ice age is coming. Watching the temperatures tonight, as of 10 PM, Baltimore’s BWI reported 25°F with a dew point of 6°F. That is very dry, so some flakes and sleet pellets will be wasted by virga to moisten up the atmosphere. What has been on radar locally is not reaching the ground. We will get in on the action by 3 to 5 AM. It may seem hard to imagine that we won’t get much snow, and the icing will be just a few hours before a big thaw. But that is thew way this storm will play out with a track to our north. We still have a Winter Weather Advisory and Freezing Rain Advisory for much of our area Saturday morning.

The latest radar simulation and temperature timeline doesn’t change the earlier forecast. It will be icy Saturday morning! But the computer models can’t handle this set up well. The temperatures on thermometers could be deceiving as the frozen ground will be last to thaw. The road crews need to stay ahead of the ice as it begins, even with some snow. But places left untreated could cake up to a 1/4 inch or more of icing. Especially north of Baltimore through York PA. If you can wait until noon at the latest, you should be OK with traveling. most areas will be in better shape with this first wave of moisture breaking up, and the temperatures climbing.
