July 6 – We have an old fashioned heat wave this week, our first real one of the summer. Considering the 70s over the holiday weekend, this may take a little adjustment. Tuesday brought an official high temperature of 89°F, but today we step up into the 90s in most places away from the water. Our normal high today should be 89°. The record was set just six years ago with one of the hottest Baltimore days in modern times at 105°F in 2015. The heat index will be just a little higher, but it will not be comfortable. The increased humidity and pollution as the winds will be light all combine for poor air quality. An official Code Orange:
A CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY ALERT MEANS THAT AIR POLLUTION CONCENTRATIONS WITHIN THE REGION MAY BECOME UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS. SENSITIVE GROUPS INCLUDE CHILDREN…PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM ASTHMA… HEART DISEASE OR OTHER LUNG DISEASES…AND THE ELDERLY. THE EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION CAN BE MINIMIZED BY AVOIDING STRENUOUS ACTIVITY OR EXERCISE OUTDOORS.

Relief from storms?
Not much action expected for a few days. The cold front will arrive Friday into Saturday, but most of the energy will be to our north side. The chance of scattered storms will push to the Eastern Shore Saturday as less humid and cooler air moves in for the rest of the weekend and early next week.

Note, the outlook of upper 80s next week suggests near normal temperatures. But there could be another heat wave building next week.
