Help Make Westminster Teacher Get Pineapple Hair Cut

Help Make Westminster Teacher Get Pineapple Hair Cut

pineapple_hair_1What does the wind, students, and Chick-Fil-A have anything to do with pineapples? Well it is just one of many ways Westminster West MS is raising money for my Wind For Change program that benefits Cool Kids Campaign. Science teacher Ken Mihalyov put an extra incentive for his school to go over the top . If they raise $10,000 he will cut his hair to look like a pineapple (like this guy). In addition to a wind blowing contest during my visit on May 10, there have been other ways the students have been raising money. This includes eating at Chick-Fil-A in Westminster on Friday April 29 between  4 to 9 PM. Please see the flyer below.

KenMI should say that Ken is a friend of mine. We ran together in the Baltimore Marathon a few years ago as half of a relay team, and he still wears his Cool Kids Team shirt today.  Ken and is up for Teacher of the Year for the third year in a row. I am a little biased and think he should get it already!   While I only get to see a small part of what he does with his students, it has a big part of my program.

I am in my 6th season of Wind for Change. That is an assembly that includes an interactive weather program plus a contest where kids measure their wind speed in a hand-held anemometer (wind speed measuring device). To date we have visited countless schools and raised over $115,000 for The Cool Kids Campaign to assist pediatric oncology patients. That total does not include the $50,000 many of you have helped me raise with my Trek Across Maryland. Ken has had the top individual school fundraising every year. He was part of the Westminster Wind Wars for a few years with Westminster East MS. They sold shirts many years to raise money, and one time he shaved his head to encourage his students to raise even more. They missed the mark for him to shave his eyebrows.

pineapple_hair_2Ken’s top year single school tally was over $6,000. Now he is pushing for his school to raise $10,000. If they do, he will get a new hairdo… to look like a pineapple. He’s been growing his hair and beard all year to build up for this.

So far the kids have raised $2,100 online though this web site plus another $700 from sponsors. That’s almost $3000 in two weeks and a long way to go until my visit on May 10th. Please help us. I really want to see him look like that.

Please bring the attached flyer to Chick-Fil-A in Westminster off Rt 140 on Friday between 4 and 9 PM and 15% of your purchase will go to the running total. If you can’t make it the get the food, you can still support the cause with a small donation online at this website.

I found a photo of a guy that might be what Ken looks like when you help him and his students go over the top.
