Severe Storm Outbreak: Risk Increases For Some Today

Tuesday April 26 – The political storm hits locally today with the primary election, but real storms could get really nasty. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted what should be a major outbreak of severe storms in the central plains with a large ‘Moderate Risk’ region between Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska seen here in red. This is where the best chance for tornadoes and baseball size hail than can lead to extensive damage. The orange ‘Enhanced Risk’ extends south to include metro Dallas. Storm chasers will be spread out on the map and video should be impressive later on.

The yellow shade on the map is where the ‘Slight Risk’ if any storm turning severe. Notice that this has been added to the parts of northeastern Maryland and southeast Pennsylvania. This represents a 15% chance that storms could produce large hail over 1 inch in diameter and 60 mph wind. The tornado risk locally is very small.

A closer inspection of the severe storm risk shows that it includes York PA to Harford and Cecil Counties in Maryland. While the individual cell might shift location and there will be more firing up through the evening, the simulated radar shows the prime target in this risk area will be between 2 and 4 PM.

Below is the rain timeline, showing a morning line of showers in Pennsylvania fading away, then the cluster of storms, followed by more widespread evening storms.  High temperatures today will reach the mid to upper 80s. Even a chance for Washington and southern Maryland to Virginia to reach 90°F.  After this front passes, cooler air will dominate for the rest of the week with highs in the 60s.
