January 29 – Did you know that despite schools being closed for a full week after Blizzard 2016 in central Maryland, many administrators still had to go in? While many school lots and main roads were cleared, this was a safety issue for kids. Large piles at street corners and over bust stops made it unsafe… but a few grown ups could deal. Yup, the Faith in the Flakes craze that spread to many school prior to the storm may have worked too well, and it’s only a matter of time until we find out if we end up with more and the affected schedule for make up days. There is still plenty of winter left. Perhaps that is why we have seen many educators showing off their sense of humor this week following our biggest winter storm on record.
In an attempt to prove he was at work under the stress of being alone in an empty school, Howard County’s Waterloo Elementary Principal Sean Martin recorded his work-day on video. Take a look… And remember that everything on the internet stays forever 🙂
In all seriousness, as Sean put it, a lot of credit goes to all the people that worked tirelessly to clear the way for the rest of us. That includes Sean’s plug for Ray, the day chief at Waterloo and all Howard County custodians. That extends to every district, plow operator, and first responders. I know this storm was a love/hate thing. Regardless of what side you are on, this proved the need to work together and the importance of friendly neighbors.
