BlizzardWarnExpandJanuary 22 – The Blizzard Warning we have chatting about now covers a wider area. York and Lancaster along with southern Pennsylvania to Phildelphia are included. It’s the National Weather Service Office near Philly in Mount Holly, NJ that covers the Delmarva and they expanded it through the Eastern Shore and northern Delaware as well. Winter Storm Warning included Salisbury. Ocean City has a High Wind Warning, Coastal Flood Warning, and Winter Weather Advisory.

Temperatures

Temps6PMThere are two reasons why this is important. First, more areas will be impacted by the blizzard conditions and heavy snow. But the other relates to something I mentioned earlier this week. The cold has been colder than expected this week as the arctic air was not seen well by the models. As the snow moved in, we were supposed to be in the upper 20s to near 30°F. Instead, we have teens and lower 20s.  That means:

  • NOT wet heavy snow for central Maryland, but the places on Delmarva just added that were supposed to get more mixing will have that heavy we snow.
  • Fluffy snow can pile higher.
  • Higher snow drifts possible
  • The expansion into southern Pennsylvania goes along with what I mentioned about that clipper the other night. It verified much farther north as Washington and central Maryland got hit. The atmosphere is primed to expanded the worst conditions farther north in this event, but the colder air in place allows southern Maryland to hold the cold and snow longer. So it just spreads out the playing filed.
  • I still think we are in line with the same snow totals. But but more areas of central Maryland will be above 1 foot by sunrise on Saturday and the 20 inch mark when this wraps up.

At this time as the coastal Low takes form, we can track it closer. The Low will stall for a few hours off of the southern Delmarva mid day Saturday. That should be the peak of the storm intensity and worst conditions on the shoreline. I have not touched much on that yet, and will try to post more info for the coast later.  But the interesting feature might be around mid day Saturday when an eye might show up on the satellite image. Like a winter hurricane, or Burricane as some have suggested today.  If you saw my earlier posts as the slider images were chopped off, please try them again.
