Rain Ends Heavy Tuesday Morning Then Last Warm Day

The overnight round of rain is part of that same storm system that has produced deadly tornadoes in the south, and now responsible for setting up ice and snow from Chicago to northern New England.  Some of that energy from this extreme weather will arrive as the front swings through after daybreak on Tuesday. Rain will be heavy at times tonight and pulse with a last heavy burst after sunrise. Then the warm push of air will be with us one last time… this year.  Below is a look at the radar simulation into Tuesday morning with an additional 1/2 inch or more of rain with this little event.

As for the warm air, it will be nothing like we saw before Christmas or earlier this month. The record for December 29th is 77°F set in 1984 (and some previous years). That is the all time warmest recorded in Baltimore in this month, and warmer than what we have seen over the past few weeks. It’s ironic that saying ‘only the 60s’ is what we will aim for. Then a drop to the low 40s for afternoon temperatures as we welcome 2016. Hit the winter reset button! I’ll have more on that in my morning report.

Simulated Radar: Rain Timeline

Moderate to heavy rain will fall overnight and last into mid morning Tuesday. We are still on the cool side of an approaching warm front with the easterly winds adding moisture to the mix. While there is energy aloft from the southwest, the surface winds from the east can often enhance the rain arriving. I do not expect severe weather but a ruble of thunder with a morning downpour is possible.
