Monday morning, December 7 was another clear and frosty start to the day. But Carla Carr captured these images of the sky show that was worth standing out in the cold. If you missed it, there may be another chance Tuesday morning December 8. That is depending on the weather of course, as a coastal storm pushes out to sea. The crescent moon and Venus will do a little dance in the sky, but stand out in the east… if the clouds break. There is a better chance of this west of the Chesapeake Bay rather than by the beaches or Eastern Shore.
This conjunction of Venus and the moon was pretty close from out vantage point. The bright object was the planet, but the moon is closer and will transit across the sky much more from day to day. The moon orbits Earth at 2,288 mph, and will rise just under an hour later. This will make it appear lower in the sky than Venus, as both become visible after 5 AM.
First, here is a closer view of what Carla captured during twilight Monday morning. Below, a look at what the sky view illustration showed. compare that to the projection for Tuesday morning, for how the Moon and Venus will align.
Here is the projection for Tuesday, December 8th: Note that if the clouds break by you, look east between 5:0 AM and and 7:30 AM for a glimpse. The moon will rise at 4:14 AM, but it may take a half hour or longer to rise above tree lines or obstruction from buildings and nearby hills for most. If you have a clear view east, then you might head out earlier. The crescent will be smaller/less illumination, but the earth glow will be more prevalent.

Holiday Spirit Giveback: Faith in the Flakes Christmas Shirts
My boys and I are rocking our shirts from last year and believe we will see snow this month. It might be hard to imagine with this stretch of rain. We want to spread the joy in a new way. Among the new styles, we have holiday or Christmas colors, and waiting for ours to be printed. We thought it would be great if families would wear these together to open gifts under their trees. In appreciation for your support, we will be using 20% of the proceeds of these holiday shirts to purchase winter coats for kids and donating them before Christmas. The collections from this design will be added up through Dec 21 (official start of winter).
We know Hanukah is this weekend, and there are other holidays you may celebrate. This is the most universal.
