October 11, 2015- A few chilly mornings have heaped to accelerate the change in color across the Mid Atlantic. A sea of purple at the Ravens game looks perfect with today’s weather in Baltimore. After a start in the 40s we aim for downtown temps near 70F. It will remain in the 60s inland, where a short drive can get you to some colorful trees. There are pockets of moderate coloring York County to the north. Some spots around nearby waterways/lakes are shown off below as well. I asked for some hints on Saturday and got lots of suggestions. So enjoy the photo collection below if you are thinking about a Sunday ride. But to see the peak, you will need to head to the peaks for a full day trip. That is where we will start the picture show, in the mountains.
According to Peter Vladislav Uhlir, Lindy Point Overlook at Blackwater Falls State Park is the place to go:
“If you want to see peak fall color now, Go west to Strasburg, Va. Get on Highway 55. The leaves are at peak on the West Virginia/Va border on the mountain. Stop at the Wardensville fall festival (ends today). Continue straight on route 55 past morefield where changes to 48. Follow it all the way to Davis. On highway 48, the colors are literally the best I’ve ever seen right now. After 48, it’s basically peaking everywhere.”
Peter also got this foggy view by West Virginia’s highest point: Spruce Knob Lake
Skyline Drive
