StormMapSunFirst of all, this is NOT Hurricane Joaquin hitting the Mid Atlantic. That storm is more than 1000 miles away and now on the move away from the Bahamas into the central Atlantic. The winds are down slightly to 125 mph and it is now moving to the northeast at 13 mph… away! Track map is posted below.

It is a large storm but not hitting us now.  The hurricane fore winds reach 50 miles from the center, while the tropical storm force winds extend 205 miles away. Not enough to reach the US. But this complex pattern is making it feel like a tropical storm, lasting for many days. The combination of Joaquin with a closer upper level Low in the Southeast US and very strong High Pressure in eastern Canada is funneling the wind in off the ocean. The beaches have had 50 mph gusts and waves to 10 15 feet. Off shore buoy has measured waves over 20 Ft and conditions will get worse at mid day high tide and again after midnight as seen in this map.
