This is the turn we were waiting for, as Major Hurricane Joaquin continues to devastate The Bahamas. It is a large storm with hurricane force winds reaching 50 miles from the center, but tropical storm winds extend 205 miles away. The winds are 130 mph, but the pressure is up to 942mb. This is still formidable, but increased from yesterday’s 931mb reading. So it appears the storm is hurting itself by sitting over the same area and upwelling cooler water while churning the ocean. This delay in crawling north is later than expected and the reason why the track is now well off of the east coast.
The most impressive thing here is that it may seem like a tropical system is hitting because it may feed tropical moisture in the system in the southeast US, but the storm itself will stay well offshore. So the flooding from rain that could exceed 10 inches in South Carolina, the coastal flooding much of the Mid Atlantic coast, and the high winds that could reach 60 mph at the beaches are NOT from Joaquin.
