My friend Shawn Madden was a friend to anyone who knew him. He died a few weeks before my first trek in 2014 and left not only hole in my support crew, but in many lives. He also left a wife and two children behind, among many others. The day is dedicated to him, his endless smile, and determination to make every single person he knew the best they could possibly be.
Shawn’s mother died of heart disease when she was only 52. He made his life mission fitness, telling her story, and helping others. That’s why he opened two Gold’s Gym franchises in Shrewsbury, PA and Eldersburg, MD. On August 1, 2014 he died of a double blockage to his heart, while siting in his office in his gym. The place he wanted to be. He was only 45 years old and otherwise a pinnacle of clean, natural health (even recovering from a lingering foot issue). He was professional fitness champ. The ultimate irony.
His wife Heather is my cycling instructor and a friend. The photo below was on their anniversary at a cooperate event in Las Vegas just two weeks before he passed away unexpectedly. This day is dedicated to them both in the only way I knew how… to ride! A few friends are joining my team today, August 12, 2015 to do just that. It is a day that we get to rest our feet as we site on a bike seat. This change will cover 53 miles and allow us to focus our minds on what matters in life and the people around us.
I am still out here with my team to raise awareness and raise money for the programs at Cool Kids Campaign. Please consider your support to reach our big goal before we reach Ocean City on Saturday. Today’s route below and track us live as we might pass through your town.
