Screen Shot2015-07-13 17_01_33Earlier this afternoon the National Hurricane Center officially names Tropical Storm Claudette. It was hard to miss with 50 mph winds, even though most of the activity was northeast of the center. This was well over the Atlantic and moving in that direction at 17 mph. Tropical Storm force winds reach out 70 miles from the center, so large waves could reach the coast and direct impact on the cruise lines to Bermuda.

So in this summer without a summer, and after the deluge of June, we have good news. This is the first tropical system this year to NOT hit Maryland.  We expected a low season number of storms locally thanks to the building El Nino. But the pre-season Subtropical Storm Ana in May and everlasting Tropical Storm Bill in June both had Maryland in its sights. In fact Bill’s center passed very close to Baltimore as a depression, but brought a round of severe storms and flooding just before Father’s Day. So with Claudette being a ‘fish’ and staying out to sea, that is as much news as one hitting us.

Below is a look at the latest satellite loop animation,  images, and forecast (intensity and tracks), which show this continuing to move away from the coast to the northeast.  The main threat is increased waves, but also rough travel for the Bermuda cruise lines. I was on one recently and the water in the Gulf Stream was turbulent. Otherwise the track points towards eastern Canada. We are still looking west for a more direct impact from severe storms this week. More on that in my earlier post.
