Tuesday May 11 2021

Another cold front will be moving through today. You may have already noticed the clouds building back. If you have not yet, they will. Any location today will be hit or miss for rain showers.

We are also timing the weather again for the 5th NASA attempt to launch a rocket at Wallops Island.  Then the cold air in the morning that may bring a late frost inland.

It is possible some spots get a few over a few hours, while others remain dry. It’s hard to pin each area when the showers are scattered.

I write this report from personal perspective. My son’s baseball team has a game this evening, and we got rained out last week. My ‘bonus’ daughter has two softball games as well, at two different fields.

Needless to say we have some chaos and on edge for potential rain.  They good news, I think we can get them in, but may be dodging some showers.

Here’s a look at a model simulation and the radar widget to compare.

Any shower is likely to last 20 minutes or less.

Temperature Change: 2 PM to 10 PM

It will be getting chilly again (60s to 40s inland) as this passes, even if you are lucky enough to miss the rain.

Rocket Launch?

8:05 PM – The 5th attempt by NASA to launch from Wallops Island.  This will create an artificial aurora to study upper level winds.  But clouds and surface winds have impeded the experiment.

Once again, the weather will on the threshold of acceptable limits.

Forecast Clouds

I should point out our trend to verify 1 to 2 hours earlier than this model plot.  So clouds could be rilling over Wallops Island a little sooner.

Forecast Surface Winds

The winds will be brisk off the coast, while we also get strong winds shifting behind the front.

Will It Happen This Time?

I honestly don’t know. But they will surely try…

Morning Frost Inland?

Temps will drop into the 30s west of Baltimore and Washington. Lighter winds are needed for frost to form… But regardless it will be chilly. I would play it safe and either cover or bring your sensitive plants inside for the night.

Sunshine State Of Mind

I am done with the cold and snow (for the season). I am embracing my wife’s mantra of Sunshine State of Mind. This was designed by Shannon Berk and we will be wearing it through spring and to the beach.

Double Benefit: Proceeds will be split between our nonprofit Just In Power Kids and the development of my new weather website. That has been scheduled to be ready to launch in May.
