The full moon of April 2021 will be a special one. If your pets or kids are acting strange, there may be a good reason for it. Yes, that is a thing, but I have yet to see any human grow long full body hair and fangs.
For starters, the name Pink Moon may be deceiving as this will not be pink. It is a name for the full moon of this month coinciding with the flower blooms of Spring. However, refraction in the atmosphere with moisture and pollution can enhance the color as the moon rises and sets.
This event will be about the size and brightness which should be more dynamic for three cycles in a row.
Elliptical Orbit
The orbit of the moon around Earth is an eclipse, rather than a circle. That shape means there are times when the two bodies are far apart (apogee) and close together (perigee).
- The average distance is 238,900 miles
- This Full Moon will be 222,221 miles away.

Supermoon
This real special aspect is that this will be the first of three super moons in a row. The full moon will occur while the illumination is within 90% of perigee. That makes the moon appear larger AND brighter than average.
In contrast to a micro moon, full moon at apogee, the moon will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter.
Supermoon Timing
It will appear to be full for a couple of days
11:31 PM Mon April 26, 2021 = Official time of Full Moon.
Supermoon Viewing: Baltimore Reference
Monday
7:55 PM = Sunset
7:33 PM = Moonrise. If you have a wide open view, both will be visible at the same time.
Weather:
The sky will be clear across our region, so there should be easy viewing.
Tuesday
6:40 AM Moonset
Illumination will be 99.82%
8:51 PM = Moonrise
Illumination will be 98.77%. So without a telescope, this may still appear full.
*Approximate difference in size in the sky
Next Two Supermoons
May 26th = Flower Moon AND Lunar Eclipse
We will only see part of the eclipse at moonset that morning
June 24 = Strawberry Moon
Sunshine Sate Of Mind
I am done with the cold and snow (for the season). I am embracing my wife’s mantra of Sunshine State of Mind.
This was designed by Shannon Berk and we will be wearing it through spring and to the beach.
Double Benefit: Proceeds will be split between our nonprofit Just In Power Kids and the development of my new weather website. That has been scheduled to be ready to launch in May.
