Monday September 14 2020
A cold front moved through our region this morning and the sky was supposed to be clear. But while crisp autumn air is building in, a thick haze dimmed the sun. It looked more like a muggy sunset. Some suggested the lighting was a reminder of the solar eclipse from 2017.
The satellite this afternoon was as busy as it gets. Hurricane Paulette passed by Bermuda and Hurricane Sally skirting the Gulf coast. Both reached category 2 intensity with 100 mph winds.
However that muddy brown was smoke form the wildfires in California and Oregon that have crossed the entire nation, reaching us on the east coast. The main band of smoke particles was measured between 20,000 and 25,000 Ft above the ground.
Forecast Smoke
There is a lot more smoke on the way, as forecast by the HRRR Model. Here is a loop showing the entire nation so you can see how it will continue to progress. The orange and red shade shows the higher concentration of smoke particles that will expand through Pennsylvania and Maryland through Tuesday morning.

Temperature Forecast Adjustment: Cooler
AS you might imagine, if we get more smoke and haze, this will dim the sun and keep us cooler. The National Weather Service in State College PA has caught on to this. While NWS in Sterling VA has not discussed this, the same should apply across Maryland and the Mid Atlantic.
You can see your local forecast on the weather pages we built for you. We likely will end up cooler and less sunny than shown
