Tuesday July 21 2020

While we are deep into this heat wave, the conditions today are more favorable for strong thunderstorms.  Some of these have the potential to reach severe limits, with the primary risk of damaging winds, flash flooding, and dangerous lightning. This wil be from the mountains to our west. Another storm nearly stalled around Snow Hill, MD has send clouds over the beaches this afternoon.

Here is a snapshot of the mid afternoon conditions, two short range model radar simulations, and live radar with lightning. Prime time in metro areas should be between 6 PM and 9 PM.

I want to repeat my disclaimer that the computer modeling has left us short. It is underestimated storm activity, lagged a little south and one to two hours slow. So why show them? Because it still can be a helpful guide to the general activity and coverage areas that may be affected.

Wind Flow

When the winds are from the east off of the Bay, that can enhance storms between the mountains and the urban areas.

Doppler Radar (Snapshot at 3 PM)

There is more activity than the first model in each slider below one hour later at 4 PM. This is why I expect the storms may arrive earlier and cover a larger area.

If you are at the beach and it’s been cloudy, that some by Snow Hill (southeast of Salisbury) has been the reason. It formed on the sea breeze boundary and has been nearly stalled since before 2 PM, but sent out a large plume of clouds.
