The humidity is about to break after one more hot and steamy day. The ingredients are with us to help feed developing storms this afternoon in the mountains may turn severe. That would hit the threshold of damaging winds over 58 mph, large hail over 1 inch in diameter, and isolated tornadoes. The heat will break this weekend. In a few days the afternoon highs may be cooler than this morning’s temps.

This view at sunrise shows the clear sky (dark) in the mountains that will spark the initial showers. The low clouds and even fog (white shading that does not move) east of the mountains is a strong indication of the abundant moisture in place.

Along with high humidity, temps between 85ºF and 90ºF will fuel storm development.

When the wind is from the south to southeast, that often helps enhance storms between the mountains and the Chesapeake Bay.
