Friday May 22 2020
Today is my dad’s birthday. He will be joining us via FaceTime for our morning Pledge program at 9:30 AM on Facebook. I hope you can join us to help wish him well.
The weather pattern is finally breaking down and changing. That blocking High Pressure is is moving away. That is what kept us with a steady east wind and stopped the cut off Low from reaching us. Today, is when it moves through and is already bringing rain with it.
The maps below will show how the surface Low Pressure will pass through central Maryland and time out the rain today. There will be some thunderstorms that develop both today and into Saturday. Then the weather will improve. While Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, we will get summer weather returning next week.
Friday Morning Mesoscale Analysis
Low Pressure near Richmond Virginia will make the trip north to Baltimore. The circulation will move the rain north and keep the surface winds from the southeast, warmer and humid. After this passes by, the flow will shift from the west, as plotted in the timeline slider below.
Water Vapor Satellite Loop
A band of moisture will pump in form the Atlantic and feed into the rain today.
The southeast flow is favorable for thunderstorms across the Chesapeake Bay region. This will last into Saturday. Then the weather will improve for Memorial Day, with a return to the 80s next week.
Doppler Radar Loop
The rain includes bands of heavier showers.
As we can see, there are breaks in between. What we will see today will be more showers and storms develop in between the lulls. So even if you get a dry break, it can turn wet or stormy at any time.
Rain Timeline –> slider
I plotted the Low in the red circle. Track it north and the flow of rain bands. The direction will shift after it passes by.
Climate Report
To date, this is the second coldest May on record in Baltimore. See the Weather Collection Lab from this morning for more info about that.

Looking Ahead
After the rain today and showers on Saturday, dry weather will return for Memorial Day. If you are heading to the beach, I will have a closer look at the weather there in my next report.
The dry weather and shift of winds should allow us to finally warm up next week.
