May 19 Weather TS Arthur Stronger And Moving Away But Still Affecting Us

Tropical Storm Arthur has strengthened to 60 mph winds as it continues to move away from the US coast. However there is a traffic jam of weather systems resulting in both a contained cool easterly wind and blocking the rain event in the MidWest.

We will take a look at Arthur this morning, then the impact on Maryland Weather and across the Mid Atlantic region.  The good news is that after a cool week, warmer temperatures will develop over the Memorial Day Weekend.

The circulation off of the east coast is Arthur with the highest cloud tops (red) east of the center. Look to the west (left) for the stalled upper level Low. That was supposed to get stuck over our region, but has not made it yet. Maryland and the Mid Atlantic are in the subsidence zone (rain free) in between.

The National Hurricane Center is expected Arthur to curve to the southeast this week. It may strengthen a little this morning, then turn Post Tropical and weaken. It will not reach shore, but it will continue to impact us this week.

As Arthur curves away, High Pressure in eastern Canada will combine to increase the pressure gradient.

Today: Winds will be stronger from the east.

The stalled storm in the Midwest will be blocked, and not able to move in with rain until Friday.

As Arthur curves off of the coast, the upper level pattern will slowly let the Midwest storm reach us by Friday.

 

Friday Afternoon

When the rain arrives, it will not be heavy. But a period of steady rain and surrounding showers will pass through. Then we can turn the temperatures back up over the holiday weekend.
