April 12 2020

If you are celebrating Easter, you might want to take some time this afternoon to bring in loose items from your yard. The forecast can move outdoor furniture to other yards, make branches fly, and knock down some large trees.

For the third time in a week we have a wind storm with warnings issued. This could be the strongest event of the bunch. Monday brings a wind storm independent of any severe thunderstorms and it can be intense any time of the day. At least most people will be home to pay attention and hopefully stay safe.

A High Wind Warning is for winds to 60 mph across Delmarva and the mountains to the west. A Wind Advisory is for winds up to 50 mph across most central areas. That covers the broad expectation throughout the day, but winds may be strongest in the afternoon as the model forecast posted below.

High Wind Warning/Wind Advisory

Weather Set Up

This is often a turbulent time of year but it still can surprise many with the frequency of these events. Across the US today we have severe storms with a tornado outbreak across the Deep South, while a snowstorm is crossing the northern plains, where 6 to 12 inches may add up between parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the U.P. of Michigan.

Storm Animation

We need to watch the storms move our way overnight, then new storms form in the morning.

  • The severe storms in the south today may hold some integrity overnight and reach us with one round in the morning. We could have severe storms with damaging winds between 4 AM and 8 AM.
  • The second push will be with the actual cold front in the afternoon. That is when the strongest winds and large hail is possible. The expected in metro areas will be between Noon and 4 PM.

  • Wind Speed is measured as an average of 1 minute up tp 10 minutes. That is what is shown here.
  • Wind Gusts are maximum bursts between 3 and 20 seconds long. Gusts are higher, but last less time.

Peak Wind Gusts (Forecast)

This forecast is higher than criteria for the Wind Advisory and can result in more damage. Wind gusts may not be this widespread at this intensity, but some areas could reach these destructive levels.
