Saturday January 25 2020
Heavy rain fell overnight and the bulk of it has moved on this morning. We will still be in for showers through the morning, with an improvement by noon. The back side of this storm has colder air and it will bring snow back to the mountains. So a fresh few inches will cover western Maryland and those nearby ski areas to end the weekend and recover from this event.
Our outlook brings back seasonable temperatures next week. You may have heard some chatter about a snow storm next weekend. I DO NOT subscribe to long range storm calls, especially this winter with poor model performance. What I do see is a trend to dislodge arctic air and bring us an active pattern in February. We may have three storm events in a 7 day period and the odds of getting snow will increase!

This Afternoon
Tonight/Sunday
Snow returns to western Maryland. Cool, but dry winds reach the rest of our region.
Looking Ahead
Jet Stream: This is a 2 Week Outlook. The blue represents troughs (colder air aloft) and the orange ridges (warmer air aloft). Notice the trend next week will be cooler, but the week following February 2 gets very active with troughs. This is the period that could bring us up to 3 storms with colder air available.
I will NOT show surface plots since I don’t think the models can handle it well now. But the pattern supports winter weather (finally)
Temperature Outlook
Farther out in time, the modeling often trends to average. I believe the result will be colder than shown in February.
